Ask HN: Gradations

A serious problem with public schools, and to a lesser extent private schools, is that they are built around the lowest common denominator. The whole goal is to get kids who can just barely pass over a minimum bar to graduate. There are no tiers above that. There is no differentiation for those who really want to excel. Wouldn't it be great if there were some sort of rating system 0 - 100 after kids finish high school. Maybe 20 would be someone who just met the minimum qualifications for graduation, while someone at 99 would be a math olympiad winner type of person. Maybe 50 would represent a college graduate?

Yeah, that is pretty much what your GPA communicates. If that doesn't work, SAT and ACT scores also give information. None of those are perfect mechanisms for understanding people's capabilities, but we certainly don't need to invent yet another measurement - we already have some.
