mastodon? That's probably the closest open source decentralized social media option to Twitter.

HN is a different beast.

Also, why is open source important for you?

The community is the real moat for HN, not the code.

Adding to this phpBB is about to have a new major release [1] using Symfony, adding webpush notifications, @mentions, new modular storage system among other things. The overall goal is to modernize the forum platform.
