During a conversation with ChatGPT about my current and past bedtimes, I discovered that the model does not have access to a real-time clock.

Time is an objective, factual element that structures daily life, and without awareness of it, ChatGPT cannot accurately determine or reconstruct past or present events. This is relevant for both simple use cases, like sleep tracking, and more complex or critical questions, such as “At what time did an earthquake start?”

While ChatGPT can process user input, it also generates its own conclusions and reasoning. Without objective timestamps, the outputs may be inaccurate in scenarios where precise timing matters.

I understand that this design limitation may exist for privacy and safety reasons. However, it could be addressed by explicitly asking users for consent, for example: “Is it acceptable to log or reference past and future timestamps for this session?”

I have already sent feedback to OpenAI via their official support channel, but I am sharing this here to invite discussion and visibility among the tech community.

The core point is simple: giving ChatGPT access to real-time, objective time (with user consent) would significantly improve reliability and practical utility in time-sensitive applications.
