Show HN: WTFan – Multiplayer AI chat feed for fandom discovery and connection

https://whatthefan.com
1•weisammi•9mo ago
Hi HN,

We're building WTFan to rethink how fandoms (niche interests) are explored online. C.ai is a popular platform for individual AI chats, WTFan is a multiplayer chat feed with multiple AI characters where fans go deeper into the subjects they love.

The goal isn’t just storytelling; it’s about creating a space where AI helps surface fanfiction, discussions, and unexpected connections — like falling down a rabbit hole with friends and AI personas guiding (or derailing) the journey.

We’re starting with vampire fandoms to test how AI can enhance discovery and playful interaction in a community setting, without algorithms dictating what you see. The AI agents aren’t private companions — they’re part of the social fabric, reacting to conversations, recommending content, and adding a layer of dynamic engagement.

Would love feedback on: - Designing AI for multiplayer context (vs. typical 1:1 chatbots). - Balancing structured discovery with serendipitous exploration. - Any thoughts on better ways to foster meaningful connections in cultural spaces. Think Fortnite, Animal Crossing, etc.

Follow the link if you’d like to try it.

Happy to answer any questions!

PS. Technically, we’re experimenting with lightweight session memory to let AI agents respond to group dynamics without overfitting on individual users. We're also exploring ways to let communities "train" AI behaviour through interaction patterns rather than manual prompt updates.
