Taking on Musk, New York Considers Move to Close Tesla Dealerships

I don't like Trump or Musk's politics, and there is something very wrong in both their heads, but taking your dislike out on Tesla dealerships is like something they would do.

We're better than this.

Smeevy•9mo ago
The article seems to be discussing the revocation of Tesla's special treatment in New York. If that's the extent, then I don't have a problem with it.
damnitbuilds•9mo ago
The subhead reads:

"Elon Musk’s alliance with President Trump has prompted Democratic lawmakers to propose stripping Tesla of its ability to sell its cars directly to consumers."

Whatever they are doing, they are doing it for the wrong reasons. For Trump-like reasons.

That should be enough for all we decent people to have a problem with it.

RegnisGnaw•9mo ago
But they want to give the special treatment to other car makers: "Under her plan, the licenses could be redistributed to rival electric-vehicle manufacturers like Rivian, Lucid and the Volkswagen affiliate Scout Motors, which also employ a direct-to-consumer sales approach."

So its basically what Trump is doing, but the other way. I'm okay if they strip Tesla's special treatment or give the same to the other EV makes, but not both.

Smeevy•9mo ago
I hate to say it, but I'm really okay either way as I think about it more.

I'd prefer to stay aligned with politicians who don't "go low", but I can also see the benefit of forcing our far-Right extremist party have to occasionally eat some of what they shovel out every day. The mere hint of consequences for the decades of bad faith from the Republican party makes them squeal that they're being oppressed. If they're going to complain about unfair treatment constantly, is it so wrong to make them actually endure some?

I'm a little ashamed, but all of my sympathy for Musk and MAGA has been spent. There are people who are actively being harmed by this administration that are far more worthy of our concern.

aurareturn•9mo ago
Why? Isn't this the exact same targeting that Trump is doing to entities and individuals?

Democrats should be above this in my opinion.

US Government targeting businesses due to party affiliation is crazy.

RegnisGnaw•9mo ago
The democracy is CAN/US has devolved into an almost like 'us-vs-them' paradigm. While its not everyone, but a lot of people think that its okay since we're the good guys.

We're in an election cycle in Canada (I am citizen of both countries) and the amount of signs being destroyed is much higher then I've ever seen.

sinuhe69•9mo ago
As long as they think in the venue “we are above them” and “they are deplorable”, I don’t find it surprised that they are using the same tactics.
Arnt•9mo ago
What Trump does is to grant exemptions (e.g. from secrecy rules at the Pentagon), invent special rules (e.g. no security clearance for lawyers who've served the clients Trump doesn't like), take bribes (e.g. security clearance from the goverment but only once you've agreed to work for Trump's political friends for free) and so on.

What's being proposed here is to revoke an exemption, so Tesla has to follow the same rules as other car manufacturers. That's not in the same class. An exception from the law requires continuing justification IMO. The state can IMO say "okay, our reasons were A, B and C, that doesn't apply any more" and if Tesla wants to continue to be treated specially, it has to argue for that.

(But IMO the state has a moral duty to make the transition palatable. Reasonable warning time etc.)

RegnisGnaw•9mo ago
No they're not revoking an exception, they're making exceptions for non-Tesla.

"Under her plan, the licenses could be redistributed to rival electric-vehicle manufacturers like Rivian, Lucid and the Volkswagen affiliate Scout Motors, which also employ a direct-to-consumer sales approach." This is exactly what Trump is doing.

Basically no special license for Tesla, but special license for others. I'm either special license for all or special license for none.

Arnt•9mo ago
They are revoking an exception and making exceptions for some others. What makes you state that they aren't revoking an exception?
RegnisGnaw•9mo ago
Sorry that was a typo.
