Ask HN: How is Windows 10 EOL impacting you?

No idea what the plan is for my customer for the hardware they manage, but first they need a plan for the Lync migration.
brudgers•9mo ago
I switched my older laptop back to Linux when the SSD failed late last year. I had already upgraded the newest laptop to 11 when I realized EOL needed dealing with. My oldest laptop has been Linux since I eBay’d it.

In my experience On The Whole Windows 11 is better than 10 was better than 8 was better than 7 was better than XP was better than 2000 was better than 98 was better than 95 was better than 3.1 was better than DOS.

Don’t have an informed opinion about Vista or NT or 2.0 or 1. Never used those in anger.

To put it another way, EOL for 10 is not worth emotional energy. If I need it, I will just put it on a computer. Good luck.

I am a desktop user. I am not going to care until something that I use daily breaks.

I was against moving to W10 until I was finally forced to do it by upgrading to newer hardware. When I moved, W10 was already 6 years old which came with the benefits of not being an unpaid beta tester for Microsoft as well as having all the scripts and tools to make it less of a nuisance to use.

I intend to do the same with W11.

muzani•9mo ago
Well I have an old laptop that can't upgrade to W11. The battery is dead and bloated. It overheats when playing Roblox. It doesn't even handle Marvel Rivals. The camera and speaker no longer work. Two keys have peeled off.

This might just be the last straw where I buy a new one.

Ekaros•9mo ago
I have to bother to update my desktop at some point...
kevinherron•9mo ago
I'm primarily a macOS and Linux user, but I do have a 2nd work laptop and a VM I use for Windows, both of which I upgraded to Windows 11 2-3? years ago.

There's never been an issue. It's a better experience than W10 was. I don't really understand why everybody is upset.

I don't play video games so maybe that's part of it?

codingdave•9mo ago
> I don't really understand why everybody is upset.

Because Win 11 has hardware restrictions. Forcing an upgrade to 11 means forcing people to buy a new PC, in many cases.

abstractspoon•9mo ago
One of my three machines is still running Win7 (for compatibility backwards compatibility) and it still receives security updates, sometimes even requiring a reboot.

Based on that, my intuition is that MS will continue supporting Win10 for a long time to come, because it would be unprofessional to simply abandon people who for whatever reason are unable or cannot afford to upgrade.

mikewarot•9mo ago
I'll have to go down the rabbit hole, and see if someone has fixed WikidPad yet to work with the unnecessary breaking changes to WxWidgets that rendered it worthless in source form. If not, I'll finally be forced to fix it myself and correct all 47 (if I recall correctly) uses of the variable that broke.
roskelld•9mo ago
My PC is not 11 compliant, the CPU and Motherboard (No TPM) do not pass the test. I use it as my daily driver for developing with Unreal 5 and it runs great, so the idea that this PC isn't fast enough in 2025 is wild. Given what software I use daily I'm limited to using Windows, so I genuinely don't know what I'm going to do come October.
