I know there is actual data and then there’s “anecdata,” but it’s hard to reconcile the “jobs go unfilled,” and the experience I know of everyone actually looking for a job right now (and having just recently finished looking myself).
It was bleak out there. Hundreds of applications for a handful of interviews. Maybe a few rejection emails. Mostly silence.
The actual data may not back me up here, but it feels like the worst job market since I started my career ~15 years ago.

Also anecotally, same experience (but then, biased sample: I'm spending more time on HN because I'm not at work).
I'm glad I have just enough passive income to not be stressed.

I believe what's been happening for a number of years is that companies have gotten too averse to hiring the wrong person (someone they'll want to fire shortly after hiring) and too fixated on hiring the person who can "hit the ground running day 1".
As a result, the number of candidates they consider a good fit for an opening tends towards zero.
Meanwhile,
there are people out there with skills, motivation, discipline, and experience ready to work,
yet excluded from consideration for most jobs by any number of perfectly human and common imperfections.
