Ask HN: How do you gather feedback from your users?

Obviously nothing beats a conversation with your users, but how else do you gather feedback from them? I've seen some websites with little widgets in the bottom right, some occasional popups, or some products trying by email outreach. What do you think? What's the best user-friendly way to gather more insights?

It's surprisingly difficult to get feedback. One way we get indirect feedback at Deplyr is by setting up funnels and tracking events to see where users are getting stuck. Then we directly reach out for feedback.
When I was building AskMyDocs.ai I had a "feedback" button on every page in the app. Users could just click it, type their feedback, and click submit. It would send me an email with their user info, the page they're on, and their feedback. I still get feedback this way even though I haven't been developing the app or advertising it for years now.

I agree - asking for contemporaneous feedback is key. It will not only be more accurate than someone's recollection later, it will also be tied to a transaction or other logs and can be compared and analyzed with other transactions.
It's important that the feedback doesn't take your user out of the flow. No popup windows, no long surveys.

This is what I'm most curious. How do you avoid getting in their way? I assume a very small button which launches a popup would be pretty non disruptive
