Trouble with "billing is edge case hell" is that if you code up your own billing solution you can 100% make it behave the way you want it to behave even if it is "hell". Buy some solution from a fly by night vendor who splogs and you might find the answer is "you can't get here from there" unless you code it up yourself or find a more reliable vendor.
