Most of the physics / concepts seem to be WWII naval conflict based-ish.
Makes sense considering the original movie (episode IV) inspiration for the final battle was WWII Arial combat documentary footage. The rest of the film fits that as well with the Falcon's cockpit design and so on.
Most of all though it makes for more fun / interesting battles.
