The contrast between these two men is incredible.
SonOfKyuss•9mo ago
Bill Gates was seen as a bit of a villain in the 90s, especially by the Linux and Mac user base. He never did a nazi salute though. Those were simpler times.
rsynnott•9mo ago
Yeah, 90s tech villain was a far, far lower bar than 20s tech villain (20s tech villain being more similar to 90s Bond villain).

Related, the impact dashboard showing the number of projected deaths from Musk's gutting of US international aid programs[1].

The deaths he will cause from the cessation of tuberculosis aid alone, by 2030, would make Pol Pot blush.

I'm surprised Musk, who seemed a decent guy went for that. Not sure why?
foxyv•9mo ago
This is really common in grandiose narcissists. You get a honeymoon phase where they are amazing and beautiful people. Then they get worse and worse over time once they get their hooks into people. Then when their victims speak out, all their fans react poorly because of how wonderful they were.

This is why a lot of people will defend serial abusers with the phrase: "But he is such a nice guy!"

mullingitover•9mo ago
Depends on your definition of decent, I suppose. He’s been, very publicly, a reprehensible bigot for years now. He disowned his trans daughter and said she’s “dead.” He regularly uses slurs.
preisschild•9mo ago
Remember when he called the guy who saved a lot of kids trapped in a Thai cave a "pedo" because Musk himself couldn't save the day?

He only played a decent guy and even stopped doing that in the last few years.

rsynnott•9mo ago
> who seemed a decent guy

... Ah, see, there's your problem. No he didn't, why on earth did anyone think this?
