This is really common in grandiose narcissists. You get a honeymoon phase where they are amazing and beautiful people. Then they get worse and worse over time once they get their hooks into people. Then when their victims speak out, all their fans react poorly because of how wonderful they were.

This is why a lot of people will defend serial abusers with the phrase: "But he is such a nice guy!"

Depends on your definition of decent, I suppose. He’s been, very publicly, a reprehensible bigot for years now. He disowned his trans daughter and said she’s “dead.” He regularly uses slurs.
