The ever changing software and in this case "no actually not that software" situation with Tesla's is wild. I'm amazed there are any consumes are ok with this kinda thing ...

If I buy a vehicle I want to get what I paid for and be done with it, not have weird promised expansion packs and free trials type situations.

freedomben•3h ago
Seriously, I think about this all the time, especially now that SaaS is so prevalent and unavoidable in many of our lives.

I think consumers just really have no idea what is happening behind the scenes. Especially with CI/CD most consumers only really notice something changed when there is a blatant new bug or a UI change. It would probably blow their mind to know that the software gets updated sometimes dozens of times per day without them even knowing.

My wife is an interesting example. She couldn't really care less about SaaS vs. Whatever, until Canva deploys a nasty bug that wrecks her work, causes her to lose changes, and subsequently deliver late. When I told her that my normal troubleshooting step would be reinstall the previous version and try again, and asked her how she would accomplish that with Canva, I think she finally got it.

I’ve got an old iPhone around which I didn’t update since years and nonetheless new features pop up out of nowhere.

Humans seem wired to form/join cults. Charisma can be assigned to someone, and the group of followers assembles around them. We see quite a lot of it right now.
wnevets•3h ago
Dont worry about it they barely got a truck.
cosmicgadget•3h ago
Is this purely a way to sell (S)FSD subscriptions? Seems extremely unlikely that they couldn't technically support autosteer.
duxup•3h ago
The most generous read I can give of the quote from Tesla is that they don't want to have different vehicles (or even just the truck) to have different types of Autosteer. Again that's the most generous interpretation and still ads up to "We don't want to."
colejohnson66•3h ago
The fact that a $20-25k Honda or Toyota (with a single forward facing camera and various sensors) can keep its lane in basic cruise control, but an $80k "truck" (with dozens of cameras) can't is insane. But don't worry - fork out another $8k for a "future update"!
beardyw•3h ago
In the UK we have the Trade Descriptions Act which would not see the funny side of this (though you can't have a Cybertruck here so its moot point). Doesn't America have something like that?

Yes, consumer protection laws are fairly strong here, these types called "truth in advertising laws".

I'm guessing Tesla will be sued and forced to give everyone auto steer, and if that isn't available, FSD.

tzs•2h ago
> Autopilot’s two main features are Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. The first is self-explanatory, while Autosteer is Tesla’s name for active lane keeping.

In my EV (2025 Hyundai Kona) the lane keeping is split into two functions, described below. Does Autosteer correspond to one or both of them, or does it do more?

The two I've got are "Lane Keeping Assist" (LKA) and "Lane Finding Assist" (LFA).

LKA warns if I'm heading toward crossing the line (unless I'm signaled a lane change with my turn signal) and will provide some steering assistance to fix this.

LFA continuously adjusts the steering to keep centered in the lane.

I wouldn't be shocked if they just quietly discontinue this in the next year or so.

Aren’t they launching it in Saudi Arabia soon? Is FSD legal there? If not, it’ll be inferior to any countries outside the US.
