> The US will temporarily lower its tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China will cut its levies on American imports from 125% to 10%, according to the joint statement.

That's how propaganda works.

suraci•2h ago
well it works
tromp•1h ago
If China reduced their tarriffs proportionally, they would be at (125/145)*30 = 25.862%, not 10%. It looks like the US demanded that they can always charge 20% higher tarriffs...
mytailorisrich•1h ago
I think it's because they both agreed to cancel the latest round of tariffs and to both lower them to 10%, instead, however the previous 20% imposed by the US (so-called "fentanyl tariff") is not included, which brings effective levels to 30% and 10%.

This means a lower general rate that the US have imposed on Taiwan (32%), btw...

ammo1662•1h ago
Yes. this statistics included the previously imposed 20% tariffs, but on China's side, it only included this newly added 125% without accounting for the previous countermeasures against the 20%.

Though it's worth noting China's initial counter-tariffs only targeted key products, so the presentation isn't technically incorrect.

That's why I said it is a good propaganda.

They have a good diagram here:

Trump acts as if the world was strictly zero-sum. It's almost frightening to see his tactics working - perhaps indeed, for the most part, zero-sum it is.
