Instead of (or in addition to) tariffs, what the US should be focusing on is education and robotics.
A highly trained/educated workforce in a mechanically enhanced industry is the only way to negate the cost advantage of the Chinese.

There's lots of societal and ideological forces working against this. A highly trained/educated workforce can and does notice problems with creationism, for example.

Another plus for Chinese --- less encumbered by ignorance and superstition/tradition.
This is a strange story. Writing something like this with no mention of the fact that China is already manufacturing cars sold in the US, such as the Buick Envision, is difficult for me to understand.
