I like the API, but doing this on the FE has never been that hard. It's the BE part of a live query engine that's the hard part.

There are some solutions, but they typically lock you in to a very specific stack and most of the times it's hard to write extensive BE logic. Meteor is an exception that is more flexible through it's RPC system, but it also ties you to mongo and their outdated build system.
