Show HN: Runik – generate e-reader dictionaries for fictional worlds

https://github.com/Runik-3/core
3•skoutXII•8mo ago
One of my favourite features of modern e-readers is the built-in dictionary. I love the convenience of being able to define a word while I read without breaking immersion.

As a fan of fantasy and sci-fi, I’ve always wanted an extended version of this feature that includes definitions of people, places, and things unique to the world I’m reading about. So I made Runik!

Runik parses the content from fan wikis (like fandom.com) and generates e-reader compatible dictionaries. It allows you to make edits and additions to the dictionaries you generate and install them directly onto your device (currently supports Kobo and Kindle).

I originally built Runik with friends as part of a class project. It started as a web app, but I later rewrote it as a desktop app for performance and hosting cost reasons.

Runik is written in Go (using the wails framework) and svelte for the frontend. It’s still in early development — feedback is appreciated!

Note: Kindle dictionary conversion requires `kindlegen` which comes bundled with the Kindle Previewer app (details in the README).
