Show HN: Self-Funded Game with Homemade Engine – Play Online, Steam Coming

https://bereprobate.com
23•delduca•8mo ago
Hi HN!

I’ve been building a 2D game using a custom engine I wrote from scratch – no Unity, no frameworks. It’s fully self-funded and will be released commercially on Steam.

Engine source code (MIT): http://github.com/willtobyte/carimbo

I’d love feedback on the gameplay, visuals, performance, or anything else. Thanks!

PS. You have to click somewhere on the wall to enable sound due to browser restrictions.
Jarwain•8mo ago
Not necessarily? It just started autoplaying on mobile
quiet35•8mo ago
I opened your link in a background tab, and switched to it after some time, I even forgot what the tab contains. The music started playing IMMEDIATELY with MAX VOLUME. It's 5 AM here. Nice joke. Negative interest in the game followed.
delduca•8mo ago
If we’re talking about a game, it’s very likely to have music.
quiet35•8mo ago
It's a very, _very_ loud music, and thus should not have started immediately, that's my point.
riidom•8mo ago
The only website where I 100% approve of right click hijacking :)
delduca•8mo ago
;)
dangus•8mo ago
I don’t know I am not supposed to play on a phone but it seems like nothing I click does much of anything in the game. I just keep seeing a few different phrases come up and I can’t seem to do anything.

It also seems like you’ve focused more on telling us about the technology behind the game rather than introduce the game. What’s the name of the game? What’s the premise? What type of game is it?

This might sound harsh but if this is your marketing strategy I wouldn’t even bother releasing it commercially.

delduca•8mo ago
Only desktop for now. Sorry!
dangus•8mo ago
You should probably add a message or something. Over half of all internet traffic is from mobile devices.
delduca•8mo ago
I will, thank you for your feedback.
garciansmith•8mo ago
The art is neat, but I can't seem to get past the second screen, after exiting the bedroom. It's just black, a skull or something appears, and it says "They said that light is the path of the eye" and "Then darkness comes and erases such a pat" [sic]. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I have no clue how to progress (using Firefox on Linux).

Also the game begins with the phrase "I was born to disrespect", which in this case I guess means you don't use periods at the end of sentences, but, well, you should use periods at the end sentences.

delduca•8mo ago
I have added the periods, thank you!

> Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I have no clue how to progress (using Firefox on Linux)

I forgot to say, the game finishes at this point, we are working on more scenes.

bonki•8mo ago
Is there any documentation for the engine?
delduca•8mo ago
I am building it, I was waiting for establish the API.
krapp•8mo ago
The art is fine, no complaints. I don't know how well the hand works as a cursor since it doesn't tell me when I can pick something up, and I don't know what the gestures are supposed to do in terms of game mechanics. I found it confusing and difficult to know what to do next. And none of the text really helped. I may just be dense, though.

If I had to sum up my opinion of the game in a sentence it would be too much style, not enough substance.

owebmaster•8mo ago
Very cool! Congrats for the launch.

is the name a reference to the Brazilian genre Carimbó?

https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carimb%C3%B3

delduca•8mo ago
"Carimbo" comes from the word for "stamp," and that is exactly what a 2D game engine does—it continuously stamps sprites onto the screen.
flippyhead•8mo ago
Looks great! It was not obvious quickly enough what to do on the first screen so we gave up.
