It's Not Just a Feeling: Data Shows Boys and Young Men Are Falling Behind

For years there have been manoshpere influencers telling young men that emotional development is for the weak and that higher education is for suckers.

Is it really any wonder that men have taken these lessons to heart?

xqcgrek2•8mo ago
Is this the same NYT that supported DEI these past few years?
AnimalMuppet•8mo ago
Well, they're not a monolith. They have multiple writers, even though they make an attempt at a more-or-less-unified editorial point of view.

But, to try to steelman their position, you could be in favor of DEI, and not be in favor of it going any farther than restoring balance. If it gets to the point where the other side is down, then you could become in favor of helping the side that is currently down, even if it's not the side that was down a decade ago.

Or, you could not buy that. You could say that they're changing their position. And you could let them do it, instead of demanding that they have to be wrong forever if they were wrong once.

tacticalturtle•8mo ago
I need to stop doing this, but I always look at the top reader comments at the NYT - this one is third most recommended:

> So because girls/women are finally given the same opportunities as boys/men and are excelling, the boys/men are miffed at this? The boys/men have the same opportunities as the girls/women. The fact they lag behind is their problem not the problem of the girls/women who are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.

There’s always too comments like this - people who clearly didn’t read the article but just have an idea of what the article might be about. I don’t understand why they bother subscribing.

AnimalMuppet•8mo ago
Wow, yeah. Good think that here on HN, you never find people commenting who haven't read the article.

Wait...

tacticalturtle•8mo ago
Yeah you’re right, I was actually trying to delete my comment - this is the internet, of course people don’t read the article.

I was just struck by the crassness and popularity of that comment in an article that points out, among other things, how the suicide rate in men has jumped.
