Why Apple Still Hasn't Cracked AI

> Apple is planning to give users in the EU the ability to set a default voice assistant other than Siri, this means that users in the EU will be able to set options like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant as their default voice assistant on Apple devices.

I am not entirely sure I like the direction EU is heading. At some point they might / will cross the line. ( People old enough may remember Drivers wasn't included in the OS and you have to buy them separately ) Although I am sure the power of default always win unless it is really bad.

Nobody has cracked AI. Microsoft has been able to sell AI but I’m only in that it’s a step up on the grammar and spelling check

The current state of AI doesn’t fit Apple at all. This was hinted at in the article multiple times, but Apple likes to ship stuff that’s elegant and proven. Recent models run well for me in LM Studio and produce compelling results, but they’re not ready to be trusted, they make many mistakes, and I wouldn’t want my phone to be run by one. As noted in the article, most people inquire how to turn AI stuff off…

It seems like the safeguards around accuracy alone might be nearly insurmountable. If you ask Siri to send an email that it drafts itself and then messes up, or book some appointment for a Tuesday that it ends up booking for a Thursday, that is a terrible customer and user experience. And Apple would have no defense, other than "the underlying technology hallucinates sometimes" which for many people is not an acceptable explanation for why a feature built into an Apple product works the way that it does. I think the expectation is that whatever gets released for iOS end users will not be plagued by such concerns.

> But as Giannandrea’s engineers raced to get Apple Intelligence out, some were often given vouchers to eat for free, breeding resentment among other teams. “I know it sounds stupid, but Apple does not do free food,” one employee says. “They shipped a year after everyone else and still got free lunch.”

Yikes. Even if the "AI team" delivered on it's promises it doesn't seem wise to play "favorites" with your core teams.
