Democratic Party support in New Mexico is a more complicated beast than liberal refugees from Texas might expect.

Descendants of Spanish colonial settlers have deep ties to the Catholic Church and cultural traditions that defy easy characterization as "liberal" or "conservative" that might apply to Anglo voters.

Santa Fe is particularly strange; Anglo liberals there might feel comfortable at a Berkeley City Council meeting.

The sobering challenge of a sparse, low-income population tends to keep things grounded. Also two national labs with a primary mission of weapons development: liberal or conservative?

The state could vote either way. I don't think the current insanity in our political landscape plays very well here. But I don't get out much.
