All Elon has to do is wait 1.5 years and Trump has no power
ceejayoz•8mo ago
He's pissed off both teams, now.
duxup•8mo ago
If he can keep his mouth shut for a while, I bet he can donate some campaign funds and get some favors, from almost anyone.
ceejayoz•8mo ago
> If he can keep his mouth shut for a while…

Yeah, that's not happening.

pityJuke•8mo ago
A literal fact, he posts an average of 220 times per week post Twitter takeover. [0]

Ditto for his current opposition! [1]

The Dems are so cringe RN, courting him: https://www.politico.com/news/2025/06/05/elon-musk-democrats...
georgemcbay•8mo ago
AFAICT despite the headlines implying this is a larger push its only really Ro Khanna talking about this, not Democrats generally.

That aside, and speaking as someone who is very left leaning, a lot of the party is in fact cringe RN for lots of other reasons.

jefurii•8mo ago
Kayfabe. Remember Trump's involvement with pro wrestling and all the nonsense that goes along with that.
techpineapple•8mo ago
Maybe, but Trump can take that Kayfabe pretty far, he has a history of sort of disproportionately screwing over the people closest to him.
duxup•8mo ago
>Kayfabe

I don't think Elon brings up Epstein if they're just messing around.

dragonwriter•8mo ago
Epstein is perfectly safe for Elon to bring up; Trump's association is well known, and everyone who supports Trump has already discarded it, and everyone who opposes Trump has already weighed it into their opinion as much as they are going to; nothing is moved by it.
ben_w•8mo ago
Hmm. Could be.

But are both of their egos up to remembering it's fake? Musk might, he used that to back down in 2019, but can Trump ever back down?

danso•8mo ago
He didn’t just claim that Trump was in the Epstein files, he asserted that that was the reason that the yet-unreleased files are being prevented from release.
ceejayoz•8mo ago
Musk's responding by noting Trump's involvement with Epstein.

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1930703865801810022

This is gonna get messy.

robocat•8mo ago
> messy

Feels like the obvious outcome from the start. I still wonder why Musk drunk from the poisoned chalice of the doge.

dismalaf•8mo ago
> I still wonder why Musk drunk from the poisoned chalice of the doge

Probably the chance to download a bunch of government data.

minimaxir•8mo ago
That tweet is the equivalent of crossing the Rubicon. There's no going back for him.
ben_w•8mo ago
Musk has crossed that river's tributaries so many times since 2019, including with what looks suspiciously like bribing the electorate to get Trump into office, that historians will be arguing for centuries about which exact error was ultimately Musk's undoing.
TheAlchemist•8mo ago
Elon may have forgotten while writing this tweet, probably under drugs influence, that he was not born in the US, was there illegaly for some period of time, and that his companies are 99% depenedent on the US government.

Which is run by an 80 years old narcissist and wannabe dictator.

lawn•8mo ago
It would be hilarious if Trump deported Musk.

But alas, he's rich and white so it's extremely unlikely.

iamtheworstdev•8mo ago
i don't think skin color protects any of us from this administration. (the money? maybe)
ben_w•8mo ago
Given Trump didn't care about protestors chanting to hang his own vice president, skin colour definitely won't save Musk: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/25/trump-expressed-sup...

Like you, I'm not so sure the money won't. But at the same time, I think about half Musk's money is an absurd overpricing of Tesla shares, and most of the rest is SpaceX, only minimal resaleable stuff in xAI and x.com, even less in TBC and Neuralink — if there was suddenly no FAA approval for flights, no help selling Starlink to everyone (worldwide), SpaceX just dies.

rasz•8mo ago
Musk surely has a backup plan. There is always China, and russia.
PaulHoule•8mo ago
... and I was thinking he was going to have this problem after Trump was out.
steveBK123•8mo ago
Money does seem to poison most mens minds, but some far more than others.
duxup•8mo ago
There's an interesting theory about social media and these two guys (AND others regardless of political spectrum) that the writer calls "Twitter poisoning":

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/11/opinion/trump-musk-kanye-...

steveBK123•8mo ago
Believable Social media is a drug
mrtksn•8mo ago
It would be poetic if Elon Musk gets his citizenship canceled, assets seized and deported to El Salvador due to the alleged irregularities with his US visa.

Not that I wish him this but I just can't keep myself thinking about it considering that Musk tried to deport other immigrants pretty hard. I know people from Ivy league universities in USA getting their student visa canceled for parking tickets, speeding or laud partying.

codedokode•8mo ago
The troll getting trolled sound like fun.
ZeroGravitas•8mo ago
I do wish that for him. He would deserve it.

Steve Bannon is calling for an investigation into Musk's immigration irregularities. Would be fun to watch but probably too much to hope for.

bn-l•8mo ago
Why would that be fun to watch?
cherry_tree•8mo ago
>Schadenfreude is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, pain, suffering, or humiliation of another. It is a loanword from German. Schadenfreude has been detected in children as young as 24 months and may be an important social emotion establishing "inequity aversion".[1]

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude

ZeroGravitas•8mo ago
> Justice-based schadenfreude comes from seeing that behavior seen as immoral or "bad" is punished. It is the pleasure associated with seeing a "bad" person being harmed or receiving retribution. Schadenfreude is experienced here because it makes people feel that fairness has been restored for a previously un-punished wrong, and is a type of moral emotion.

As a Canadian... Popcorn time ;-)
archagon•8mo ago
This saga is starting to remind me of a certain Russian “chef.”
busyant•8mo ago
Can someone explain this reference?

My best guess is that this is an allusion to Rasputin, but: a) I'm probably wrong and b) I don't understand the chef part.

jfengel•8mo ago
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevgeny_Prigozhin

Prigozhin was known as Putin's Chef. He ran a mercenary army until he turned on Putin, at which put he died in a plane crash.

busyant•8mo ago
Thank you.
profsummergig•8mo ago
This is an Ayn Rand novel happening in real time. As an enjoyer of Ayn Rand, I'm feeling tingly.

Remember: if he so wants, Musk can get access to all the private messages that MAGA people DM'ed each other on X (well into the past).

A lot of vanity bonfires can happen.

burnt-resistor•8mo ago
Please leave the utopian accelerationism and libertarianism and fiction at the door, thanks. I'd rather have an open society with competent, sane leadership that doesn't kowtow to billionaires or throws away safety regulations written in blood for the sake of "small government" or "abundance".
lazystar•8mo ago
these two are masters of social media. occams razor suggests that they planned this in advance for some other purpose. my guess is theyre hoping this will cause tesla stock to rise.
awb•8mo ago
Actually, Occam’s razor would suggest that their words be taken at face value. A hidden agenda is not the simplest explanation.
steveBK123•8mo ago
Especially when it comes to rich mens egos..
aisenik•8mo ago
Occam's Razor should not be used for self-harm. Two of the guys at the head of the biggest open conspiracies in the world are likely to be conspiring if their actions result in favorable conditions.

This social media spat is happening immediately after "Welcomefest," a bizarre Republican-light centrist conference, and positions Elon Musk to capture the centrist Democratic apparatus. This follows a pattern of fecklessness and capitulation from the party's power centers, including major Democratic figures advocating for realignment with MAGA on core issues.

There's another pattern too: we have seen a concerted effort from the MAGA movement to capture societal institutions and forcibly reform them into alignment with their radical agenda to replace the US Constitution. Aligning the DNC into a technocratic fascist organization that supports their monarchic visions of domination will be an incredible humiliation (though far from the last). And quite simple.

I'm going to assume conspiracy from the guys arrogant enough to get caught boasting that the opposition is too credulous to accept an open conspiracy.

awb•8mo ago
I’m not debating the potential accuracy of anyone’s interpretation, just commenting on the degree of simplicity of those interpretations.

It’s a Razor, not a law, so it isn’t going to be 100% accuracy or predictive. But to suggest that the Razor can be used in conjunction with a long, complex explanation is a contradiction.

aisenik•8mo ago
> Two of the guys at the head of the biggest open conspiracies in the world are likely to be conspiring if their actions result in favorable conditions

This is not long or complex. It can be reduced to "liars lie" if that helps.
