I don't get it. How does he access his BTC when he needs it? Does he go to 4 continents to get the parts of his key? I can't see how it's easy for him to access his BTC, but difficult for someone who kidnaps him to force him to access his BTC.

Seems akin to virtue signalling "I don't carry much cash don't try to mug me" seems to be the real message here.
djohnston•8mo ago
Seems a lot easier to give custody of the keys to a law firm.
burnt-resistor•8mo ago
But that wouldn't be as dramatic, clickbaity, and laborious as some overly-complicated scheme that isn't even used for permissive action link codes.
grues-dinner•8mo ago
Maybe like the PAL codes, the secret to quick retrieval is that every metal card is all zeroes?

If it's good enough for the US military, it's good enough for me!

This makes no sense. It’ll just take him longer to pay the ransom once body parts of his family member start getting delivered.

Nakamoto was a genius to have the foresight to hide his identity.

Sure, this will keep his holdings safe. How does this keep his family safe?
constantcrying•8mo ago
Here is an idea: Instead of using a decentralized network, which by design can not protect users against illicit use of their funds if a third party has the private keys, what if we had trusted and regulated institutions which would provide services such a safekeeping of money or distribution of funds? Having human in the loop means of course human errors, but it would also enable us to keep the institutions accountable in case of such human error and even reverse illicit transactions.
kashunstva•8mo ago
If Taihuttu is this concerned about the security of his family and assets, then why would he want to bait would-be attackers by disseminating his family’s whereabouts so flagrantly? He turns his plans, whatever their technical and safety merits into some kind of theatre. It would seem that their needs for publicity outweigh that of safety.

I remember reading that the Templars started the first bank precisely to defend pilgrims from attacks like these. Cryptocurrency is running back the clock.

Being your own bank is no fun.

I do not understand people’s obsession with being famous. The fact that they were vlogging their lives tells me all I need to know about them. That’s what put a target on their back more than anything it seems like.

If I had enough money so I never had to work another day in my life, I sure as hell wouldn’t be bragging about it on YouTube and drawing attention to myself. Especially if my specific form of wealth has as many flaws as bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
