> base pay averages between $80,000 and $90,000 a year

"Average" is a number, a single number. Either the article is being deceptive by writing a range, or we're not talking "average". Innumeracy - no wonder they can't find skilled workers.

More seriously, Boeing's 787 production problems are an example. Boeing moved production from unionized Washington state to non-unionized South Carolina. Problems ensued. I'm not saying that unions don't have problems, or that they'd solve everything, but if you de-prioritize your labor force, I'm not sure why you'd expect to attract skilled labor.

doctorwho42•2h ago
Also, at a certain level for skilled labor, especially in a specialized industry, you will find it difficult to get enough people to uproot their lives to move to a less desirable location.
pestatije•2h ago
they dont want to be specific, they talk about averages in each company, or states, or whatever...so yes, there can be several averages, innumeracy would have to be attributed to the journalist, not the industry, and the comment about unions is right
bediger4000•2h ago
I believe that was at a specific facility, in a specific town. The ad blocker they use is keeping me out this time. If they don't want to be specific, they're taking advantage of general innumeracy giving ranges, practicing deception.
lithos•2h ago
Some unions have been very good about guaranteeing a minimum skill level of workers. Longterm thinking unions realize that part of their survival is tied to ensuring their workers are as unique and irreplaceable as possible.
nothercastle•1h ago
It’s bimodal. Experienced workers get paid a lot but new mechanics get paid 30-35 an hour with a 2 year degree from a trade school and have to carry life long liability insurance. Quality of life is terrible too as most maintenance happens at night in terrible locations. Oh an airplanes are not designed with access for maintenance in mind.
