Is Google about to destroy the web?

I'll paraphrase another commenter's opinion from a similar article few days back. That was WSJ and now it is BBC. My sense is we're gonna see this published endlessly by publishers (and posted here on HN again and again)

- Google is in a tricky position

- Damned if they do (see article) or damned if they don't

- If Google doesn't do AI Mode, ChatGPT will or perplexity, or Anthropic will

- There's a clear market need for this (user behavior is changing)

- This is the best move (game theory terms) for Google. Other companies decided to "defect" and Google has no choice

- This is innovators dilemma playing out in real time (where the expectation is company makes a move that cannibalizes existing position for long term strength)

> Unlike AI Overviews, AI Mode replaces traditional search results altogether. Instead, a chatbot effectively creates a miniature article to answer your question.

Question? What question?
