What really helped me on the last Android device that I rooted (A Bigme Galy) was the cross-platform debug/update utility from the CPU manufacturer ( in this case Mediatek) that allowed me to extract the original firmware. It would be great if there were a list of similar utilities from different CPU manufacturers. Sometimes the phone manufacturers offer something similar, too.
