Why would that nullify the efficiency gains? If AIs read, process and write all of the emails, why should I care if they write more emails than I would? This is kind of my dream, of the AI acting as a sort of Chief of Staff to me, processing all the correspondence, and only leaving me to make actual decisions, and to start entirely new flows of operation. I'd love it if I could just send a new company memo as a "fire and forget", as execs a century ago would, and assume that things are moving forward, if and until my AI lets me know about any issue.

To which I would add, there is no "productivity puzzle." To every technological innovation, the employer says, "Do more work." Not, "Go home early."

As long as the work week is not ratcheted back as productivity increases, capital will continue to demand more within the work time established by law. It's why the efforts around a 4 day week are so important, considering the magnitude of which productivity has increased over the last half century (~4x). If you don't take the time back to be human (and not a worker), the work (like the mail) will never stop being issued.
