Ask HN: Should high schools have private report cards excluding grade inflation?

These private report cards would only be shown to students and their parents.

I feel like there is a lot of backstory here that isn't included.

This would give you the best of both worlds: inflated grades for university applications and unscaled grades to help you determine your strengths and weaknesses.

No, there is already too many measures of student progress as it is. The system should be simplified not complicated with obfuscated test results. Besides, how would these obfuscated grades be tracked? Naviance? PowerSchool? does anyone think for a second that these providers would not resell this data in the end for a premium?

It would be pointless. The actual thing to do is get rid of grade inflation.
The reason it would be pointless is simple: anyone who cares about your grades will know that there's a more accurate report and simply demand to see that, ignoring the bogus one.
