I would enjoy an HN chat. Is there one?

Comments

jerawaj740•7mo ago
i may build it to put it in my portfolio to get a job, but what makes ppl use it ?
lysace•7mo ago
Do a Show HN post when it’s live.

And a few more :).

Care about it. Be a good host.

jerawaj740•7mo ago
you didn't answer the question: why makes ppl use it ? fun ? or share knowledge/opportunities ?
pillefitz•7mo ago
He did. "Care about it. Be a good host" is why people use the application vs. yet another soulless experience.
fullStackOasis•7mo ago
Wouldn't you need an HN OAuth for this to work?
chrsw•7mo ago
What about just an IRC channel?
j4nek•7mo ago
would be in.
giantg2•7mo ago
I thought there was one, but maybe it disappeared with the Freenode fiasco.
brudgers•7mo ago
Put an email in your profile and anyone who wants to chat can reach out
lysace•7mo ago
That’s like speed chess vs chess by mail.

They are nothing like each other.

axegon_•7mo ago
This. I've had my email for years. Admittedly my engagement on HN is chaotic and somewhat rare but in all those years, I think I've had half a dozen one-off emails.
brudgers•7mo ago
Maybe that shows the actual benefit (or lack thereof) DM would have?

I mean "one-off" suggests that what you received might not have delivered significant value -- what I get is usually please-use-my-product marketing encouraged only by my non-negative commenting.

firefax•7mo ago
it's hard to stay anonymous and say anything of substance, doubly so when you start linking handles
figassis•7mo ago
I love the idea, then I think about it a bit more and the value I see on HN is that almost all information is accessible. Would not want a discord like experience.

I get we also want a human connection, but if you really need a human, maybe let’s have HN meetups. It takes more efforts ao people will do it less, but it means conversations will continue to happen here, publicly.

aliasmaya•7mo ago
Like brainstorm with a team, I just love it
sublinear•7mo ago
Probably the destruction of HN
khurs•7mo ago
Hey, I just discovered this HN chat room.

How is everyone? Is Zuckerberg really a robot?

throwaway843•7mo ago
Back in the day there was a browser plugin for ICQ that let you chat with anyone else on the same webpage.

That was ~2000. I'm convinced the web has not only gone nowhere but regressed since 2009.

maxcomperatore•7mo ago
make a discord

you can just do things

gaws•7mo ago
> make a discord

No one wants that.

mmarian•7mo ago
I tried doing this a while back. People aren't really interested in this format here, which is totally understandable.

This person had a go at 1-to-1 chats, too https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39067496
