Ask HN: What hobby would you like to try?

It’s definitely writing and storytelling for me. But if you don't mind me suggesting, maybe the better question is: what hobby should we start?

I genuinely think having a hobby should be a top priority for everyone, simply for the well being and positive effects it brings. I recently started blogging (as a hobby), and ever since, I’ve been preaching its benefits to anyone who’ll listen.

Thanks for asking!

randerson001•5mo ago
Thank you! It's encouraging to receive your positive and thoughtful comment about this question. The question itself is meant to provoke self-reflection, which I've also found to bring positive effects. I imagine your blogging process does the same thing. It's well documented that the simple act of journaling does wonders for mental health. What other benefits have you found?
ednite•5mo ago
Absolutely, and for me, the biggest surprise was how it boosted my energy and clarity for my day job. Writing felt like a mental reset. Instead of draining me, it actually made me more productive. I think this can be said for any hobby we enjoy doing.

At first, I was worried I wouldn’t find the time or that the hobby would take too much of it. Turns out I was wrong on both counts. I made the time, looked forward to it, and felt reenergized afterwards .

I agree that journaling has a similar effect, it clears the mental clutter and makes space for deeper thinking.

I have so many hobbies.

I've been enjoying doing nothing lately.

sailing
msgodel•5mo ago
I'd highly recommend it. One big deal for me when I was first learning is that I got focused on optimally trimming the boat but deciding where you want to go is a big (maybe even bigger) deal. It was kind of a deeper life lesson for me.

Also spent a year living on the boat I eventually bought which let me save up enough to buy some land. Now I have a ton of footage of diy projects I might put on YouTube eventually too. Overall it's actually worked out as a better hobby than digital electronics in terms of value I've gotten out of it (both entertainment wise and monetary.)

ednite•5mo ago
Sailing is definitely on my bucket list. Hope you get to share on YouTube!
bergie•5mo ago
Sailing is great. And has so many facets. You can sail competitively with anything from dinghies to big boats. Or you can just enjoy an afternoon out on the bay. Or you can go on a world cruise.
