The following theories of how the brain works have come and gone over time:

1.a hydraulic model of human intelligence, the idea that the flow of different fluids in the body – the ‘humours’ – accounted for both our physical and mental functioning 2.humans are complex machines and thinking arose from small mechanical motions in the brain 3. the German physicist Hermann von Helmholtz compared the brain to a telegraph.

The current metaphor of the brain as an information processor like a computer arose around 1951, and like the previous theories, the metaphor is drawn from the technology of the time.
