It's not clear when it goes into effect, and for example can we now expense the last years of amortized R&D expenses. A lot of questions remain.

I'm glad it's over but feel sad that it had to be included in such an otherwise largely shameful bill that will probably cause harm due to public service cuts.

PaulHoule•7mo ago
That's good for me but other parts of that bill the cuts in research funding are bad for me because I work on a product that is sold on a subscription basis mainly to academic organizations who might not be able to afford it. (On the other hand, the crazy political system might make the service I work on more relevant.)

I think the aftermath of the next few years may spark a reaction for the better. I think a lot of people who got behind Trump are going to wake up and realize they got screwed. I think we're going to see the people who use weird words that scare minorities away are going to be driven out as well as tired establishment like Democrats Andrew Cuomo. Mamdami looks like the future, not so much because of his policies but because of his style. He's soft spoken and plain spoken, he talks about voters and his campaign, not about himself. People who interview him who aren't inclined to agree with his policies walk away saying "He was a really nice guy and he listened to me" and that's something that really terrifies the current political class.

Promising but rare example of vertical integration in left-wing populist action ? Mamdani. The horizontal integration can come later, as it has to..
PaulHoule•7mo ago
I hesitate to call Mamdani a "populist". Some people think we need somebody who has the opposite policies of Trump but is twice as angry. Mamdani is not that at all -- he's the opposite of Trump in that he is low in dark traits, nice but firm. The more hysterical and angry his opponents get and the more he keeps his cool the more he's going to look like a leader. If you see him on video you're going to be sold

The smarter centrists get it

https://www.natesilver.net/p/the-two-theories-of-zohran

It's just so cringe to seem anybody getting behind Cuomo or Adams. We've got to put that old corrupt New York machine and the politicians who are part of it out to pasture.

gsf_emergency_2•7mo ago
Tell me if you don't think he's similar to early Pedro Sanchez? What makes Sanchez not a populist is that he tamped down the anti-estab vibes as he rose. (Theory #1 in Nate Silver's, this would be the horizontal integration part)

https://youtube.com/shorts/IOFU8abI47c

(It seems like Mamdani should be able to do that without looking like a traitor tho. Also disregard that everything else screams fratboy Trudeau in that yt short)

Most worrying to the dems (on top of the antiestab look) might be that he's Muslim. Farsi to my ears. Hope they don't harp on that Or maybe they should, in the primaries, so that he builds some immunity

Unlikely+hilarious (but exciting) were he to join forces with Elon
