If This weren't about Elon Musk, we would be seeing an article about how cool the drug is and why it's not that bad (similar to the endless amount of articles on weed).

With all due respect, I have to disagree. The article is actually pretty even-handed about things, as articles on "drugs" in the US go.

That's about as good as reports will go on "street drugs". There's a 100 year or so history of mass media doing moral panics about drugs. Google for "reefer madness", a 1930s movie that tried to whip up a panic about marijuana.
In my own lifetime, I've seen weird, hair-on-fire reporting about LSD, heroin, PCP, marijuana, crack,cocaine, flakka, krokodil, captagon, and meth. I assure you that this is a pretty mild article in comparison.
