Intel CPU owners might be crashing "because of the summer heat" says Firefox dev

Serious question: might we be entering - with all the warming going on, could we be entering a period where we might be falling outside of the functional heat envelope for (most) chips?
throwawayffffas•7mo ago
Serious answer: no. I remember having chip heat issues in the summer 20 years ago. It's much better now days. Modern chips have much better throttling, and there are very good water cooling systems you can just buy, back then you had to custom assemble them.
Bluestein•7mo ago
Good point - indeed.-

Throttling and tech is better, but, heck, average temperatures are breaking all records. At some point, we are going to hit a wall ...

dlcarrier•6mo ago
I wonder if AMD systems were affected, too. Also, Intel still dominates the prebuilt-computer market, and they tend to have less robust cooling solutions than custom-built computers.

Meanwhile, anything with an Apple A-series processor needs to be in the shade, if it's over 100 °F outside. There's a company that makes an electronic flight book that only works on Apple A-series devices, and in many parts of the world, it's unusable in the summer in airplanes with bubble canopies.
