More like: Scientists find that it affects eyes at least in the short term, and hypothesize it might increase the likelihood of eye problems if the effects somehow turn out to be lifelong.

"Linked" is always a huge red flag in a science headline. It's a weasel word suggesting that they want you to believe more than the data actually justifies.
