What an amazing place to run a business.

Absolutely no one is seriously clamoring for the old team name. It's an issue that DFM. But of course, because it's on the agenda of the day we need to drop everything.

This is no better then switch from master to mainline. They're both idiotic and performative.

This exactly illustrates why the USA's Founding Fathers overthrew a monarchy in favor of a Republic. When you're at the whim of a monarch/autocrat, things happen because of the whim of that autocrat. Thank God we live in a Republic, with checks and balances on the executive office, and that the Founding Fathers got rid of the monarch.
crop_rotation•6mo ago
What checks and balances? The US Supreme Court has become highly partisan, where all justices vote along party lines of their appointing president mostly. US Congress is even less independent and has to kowtow to the leader or else get primaried. The founding fathers obviously had no chance to envision everything and it is unlikely their Constitution will forever good enough to protect against such side channel attacks.
jerlam•6mo ago
I think the comment you replied to was sarcasm.

It is kind of amazing how quickly the US political system started showing faults. For example, the first President warned about the rise of political parties at their farewell address, yet every single following President has been a member of one.

crop_rotation•6mo ago
I remember reading the book "The Powers That Be" by David Halberstam where he talks about how first the radio and later the Television made the US president much more powerful than the Congress. American democracy was much more local and decentralized before radio, and no President could get away by ruling with executive orders. In the age of social media, everyone just self bins into a few national buckets and votes accordingly, even in local elections.

Gross and ridiculous. But uh, how about all the other interfering in home rule that's afoot now?

  Repeal D.C.'s assisted suicide law.
Prohibit D.C. from using traffic cameras, or to ban rights turns on red.
  Repeal non-citizen voting in D.C.
Require that D.C. recognize concealed carry permits from every other state. Repeal a police discipline reform bill passed in 2020. Prohibit D.C. from enforcing consumer protection laws against oil and has companies for environmental claims.

Douglas Commonwealth cannot continue having these invaders messing with our right to govern ourselves. It's time (soon) so ditch the Federal District & for us be given our rights to democracy back.

nunez•6mo ago
This seems ridiculous on its face but the precedent being set here is quite terrifying. US presidents (or any state leaders, really) should not be able to block municipal projects and threaten municipal/state/local funding because of something they personally dislike. It's a direct attack against free speech.

Just more distraction from his abject failure, sorry, willful rejection of a major campaign promise.

At least his voters are getting everything they wanted: a pariah state, bleeding money and international goodwill and stripping them of healthcare and food, so that they can pay for Peter Thiel’s tax breaks, while he spends his time wasting money on golf trips and idiotic nonsense like the name of a private corporation.
