IMO the most vital aspect of this symbol's meaning -- and this is really Jung's thought, not my own, originally -- is that it represents the gnostic experience of panpsychism. The Hegelian realization that all things are fundamentally extensions of a singular fundamental psychic force that permeates all being/creation, which, when it becomes aware of that, realizes it is looking at itself in all "others", or, as it were, eating its own tail.
