It's kind of playing on the words to make a prediction that couldn't be wrong:
> I predict that 70% of engineers will transition into systems integration-like roles within five years.
Arguably, this already the case. Most software engineers already "integrate libraries" (or do you rewrite your libc for every project?). Most hardware engineers already "integrate components".
> Most engineers will no longer design or build. They’ll integrate.
But integrating is designing and building.
So the whole article boils down to "AI tools will probably stay".

> But integrating is designing and building.
Kinda, but they're still very different activities even though they're related. Being relegated to a systems integration role is actually my biggest fear about how genAI may impact my job.
If I wanted to be a systems integrator, then I'd already have that job. To my ears, this article just used a lot of words to say that yes, genAI is going to kill my job.

I do agree with everything you wrote. I guess my point was that one can include more or less into the definition of "integrating", so it's not really useful. In 5 years the author can come back and say "I predicted it", whatever happens.
But yeah, I am concerned about how genAI will impact my job.
