Can't read the article due to paywall. But i think what the conservatives forget is that they're not just being poor people far away. Diseases don't respect borders.

And thriving societies have more money to buy things from American businesses, something they seem to be very focused on with all their trade balance stuff. There's also less instability so they need to waste less money on buying armaments. Oh wait...
