Some background: A few years ago, we actually tried offering peer-to-peer mock interviews over on Educative. We did this by connecting candidates with experienced engineers. It didn't scale. Scheduling busy engineers was chaotic, and personally conducting hundreds of these interviews left me burned out. We eventually gave up on peer-to-peer mocks altogether.
However, one key insight stuck with me: engineers should ideally practice mock interviews regularly, not just cram one or two at the end of their prep. Peer-to-peer mocks simply weren't viable for ongoing practice because of cost and logistical headaches.
Fast forward to the rise of LLMs. We revisited the idea and started testing AI-driven mock interviews via our integrated coding environment. The results were promising, but System Design Interviews felt incomplete without intuitive diagramming tools. After experimenting for about six months – including adding interactive whiteboarding and speech-to-text capabilities to make the experience as immersive and realistic as possible, I am excited to release Mockinterviews.dev to the public.
Our average session rating climbed from 2.5 during alpha release to a steady 4.5 today, and we've already helped hundreds of engineers simplify the prep process and land jobs at the world’s top tech companies.
I am excited about this progress and eager to keep improving.
