Content Moderation on Mastodon Isn't the Train Wreck Some on Twitter Say It Is

I signed up for Mastodon but at the time there weren't enough people I followed before there, and as I was looking to replace twitter, it was a but quiet for me. But for this reason alone I'll give it another go - really liking the way that the federated moderation/linkage works.

This is a very long article to say that the author had a bad interaction, got the attention of their instance admin, and they blocked the griefing instance.

Which highlights one of the problems with Mastodon discussions: People interchangeably refer to “Mastodon” and “my specific server instance” as the same thing, but they’re not.

In fact, the Mastodon challenges I’ve seen have been relayed to instance admins who started with good intentions but then got tired of admin-ing, leaving the instance to drift. Some instances even disappear when their operators lose interest.

It’s a situation that feels great when you’re on a good, small instance in the early days with engaged admins. The opposite happens if time passes and your instance is no longer receiving the same attention or maybe even uptime.
