Charged $591 Instead of $5.91 on Anthropic (Claude API) – Anyone Faced Similar?

15•iapi•6h ago
Hi HN,

I ran into an issue with Anthropic (Claude API Credits) and wanted to check if anyone here has experienced something similar or can guide me.

I intended to make a $5.91 payment to settle a small negative balance and continue using Claude for a code snippet. Unfortunately, due to a misclick or input error, I was charged $591 instead.

I’ve reached out to Anthropic support explaining the situation, but I’m not sure how responsive they are or what to expect. Has anyone else dealt with accidental overcharges or refund requests from Anthropic? How was the experience?

Would appreciate any advice or insight

Thanks!

Their support has been very responsive with me, even if it takes a second to get a reply. I cannot believe that they would not reverse this in good faith if you proceed to not utilize the credits or whatever.

If they don't address this reasonably, it will be a very bad image for their brand! It is a simple problem, and an honest mistake that functionally should cost them nothing.

My customer service experience with them has sometimes required turnaround time, but never been helpful or unreasonable.

How do you contact support? Couldn't find anything on my account, is there an email address?
iapi•2h ago
Their support bot responded with: “Thanks! We’re transitioning your question to one of our human support agents for further assistance. You don’t need to keep this window open — we’ll email you once an agent replies. Typical wait time is around 2 business days.” Hoping this gets resolved soon.

Not a solution for this instance, but if you use a Privacy.com card you can set a limit (eg $20/month) and a charge mistake like this will just fail

I wouldnt worry about it. If they dont, then theyre effectively running an unregulated fund - and should be reminded of that ;)
