I have good luck using the things that are “optional on paper”. It takes longer but it’s not so bad. I show up prepared to be firm and explain myself and wait longer. I went through Heathrow recently and spent 30min exploring just how optional the scanner was. Everyone was perfectly civil and they clearly were doing it for the first time that week but (with one exception) they knew the rules and procedures.
