Need money to live. Maybe you get it directly from customers, or more likely from investors, or indirectly through an employer. The adult part is being able to choose and change where the money comes from.

I’ve done both, and I disagree with you. You are always working for someone else, either a client or a boss. Investment is not work.

There is not a single employer that has an HR department that is on your side. It's not what they're hired for. By the listed standards every employer is toxic. Which yeah sure, they're all capitalist and therefore are going to be some level of shitty. But that makes the term lose meaning. It's meant for egregious examples of bad behaviour.
