I submitted a different story a few weeks ago about China's AI datacenter boom, whose focus is in the Gobi desert,

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2025-07-11/china-... ("China’s AI Dreams Lead to Data Centers in Once-Restive West")

It's not impossible—actually pretty desirable, if you're doing large-scale solar power and need lots of cheap land—it's just that American civic culture, simply, sucks. It's the same stark story every time: China builds, the US fucking gives up.

Dunno man, if somebody turns down hundreds of millions of dollars, I'm willing to believe that they have a pretty durn good reason.
Finnucane•6mo ago
yeah, stupid civic culture won’t let nice corporation take all of its water and get nothing for it.

In April, China issued window guidance to restrict datacenter construction to avoid overbuilding: https://www.cls.cn/detail/2005527

The article you link mentions similar capacity cuts in the car industry, but apparently the author didn't research the datacenter boom deeply enough to realize that it's being curtailed as well.
