I think the only thing I need now is 24 episode / 7 season shows at least as good as TNG/DS9

This is satire, right ? Because I don’t think I’ve ever seen as much doom and gloom in the USA as there is right now.

- The economy is crashing and the government is lying to the people about who pays tariffs

- The “president” is sacking government employees who release figures he doesn’t like

- There are secret unidentified police raiding people’s homes, even citizens are being attacked if their skin color is wrong

- The borders are being enforced via political profiling and racial selection, again even citizens are being harassed

- Groups are choosing not to appeal court cases to the Supreme Court because they feel the court is politically biased and they don’t want to set a precedent that will be hard to overcome

- Women’s health is no longer their own decision in many places in the USA, Texas for example is planning to make abortion a capital offense.

- The police in general are ever more militarized with “tactical” gear from army surplus. The police/civilian divide has never been wider.

- I could go on and on about the negatives. “Weird Science” doesn’t really make up for it…

The author must be too young to recall the '80s properly.

To some, Reagan's confidence was comforting because nuclear annihilation felt imminent. To others, that confidence intensified the fear.

One can cherrypick songs (and I am about to!) but many in the '80s were depressing and goth-oriented, and many in the '90s were cheerful and dance-oriented.

The mood in the '90 was euphoric: the Cold War was over and the Internet was creating a Global Village. It was the 'End of History'.

The author must have lived in a very different 80s than I did. I get the sense that he thinks that the US portrayed in the movies of the time were a reflection of the US is reality in the time. They weren't. They were pure escapism because the reality sucked.

In any case, regardless of how things were then, things are getting even worse now.

The author was apparently born in 1979 and has extremely superficial knowledge of US history. Ruby on Rails may be fine for what it is -- I don't know and don't care -- but as far as I can tell, on most topics, this guy is an idiot.
