Perhaps the lesson out of this is to avoid purchasing or relying on devices that require third-party involvement to work. Yeah, a fitness watch that you’d use for a few years is fine but a house thermostat or lighting system isn’t something you can easily switch. Such systems should work directly to the local network using a common protocol that would survive vendor death or disinterest.
