Human boyfriends are notorious for not maturing, not growing. They don't have a formal TOS or EULA (nor a well-defined privacy policy). Chatbots do have these. Very Black Mirror, we're there now. Upgrades are out of your control and aren't just because they lost their job or got engaged.
To seem a little uncharitable, it does feel like the people put themselves into this position. In the large, we are not a thinking animal, we are a feeling animal and thoughts are secondary. (If you don't believe that, try to learn how hormones affect your thinking, eg with testosterone fluctuations, pregnancy, and remember hunger surges, grief/depression, etc.) The primate babies who cling to stick-figure moms come to mind.
