Ask HN: Anyone Else Getting YT Ads from Israeli Government Advertising Agency

28•ivape•5mo ago
When I click the ad (which is a video showing fast food restaurants servings tons of meal in Gaza, even today), it links to the following:

https://govextra.gov.il/mda/ipc/gaza

There was also an ad showing a starving child in Gaza and claiming it was false, and that the child had a genetic disease (the starving body image was apparently being used as propaganda is the implication). The YouTube link on the ad is from the Israeli ad agency.

I’m mostly lost for words. Anyone else seeing this? This shit is disgusting.

YouTube ads are targeted based on your browsing history, demographics, and location. You can check what Google thinks about you in your ad settings (https://adssettings.google.com) and disable personalized ads or report inappropriate ones.

RE "... The YouTube link on the ad is from the Israeli ad agency...."

(MAYBE) The important question is , Is the information being shown CORRECT?

However I just look up definition of propaganda, and it includes phrases like "...information to present a particular viewpoint.." "...it can be correct information.." I always assume it was incorrect information. So yes the above youtube link would fit the definition of propaganda. However we do not know if it is TRUE or NOT

Even looking for other entities with same information is not good enough. In addition the world s media seems to copy information from each other.

That means most of the previous articles on this Gaza/Hamas/Israel situation would be propaganda. I've always noted the LACK of articles criticising Hamas or even mentioning Hamas role in the situation , recently and over the last 18 months too.

I realize both sides would be releasing propaganda.

Gaza journalists are said (propaganda?) to be controlled by Hamas otherwise they get threats of violence (bashings) or death from Hamas.

This all fits in with the statement/saying ....the first causality of war is truth.

bigyabai•5mo ago
> I've always noted the LACK of articles criticising Hamas

Israel put Hamas in Gaza. They deliberately chose this humanitarian crisis as opposed to giving the PLO political legitimacy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_support_for_Hamas

This an example of the agency shell game where your argument assumes the side you want to bash has agency and thus responsibility. And the side you want to shield does not so is blameless.
asdefghyk•5mo ago
I do not understand the above. There must be a lot more too it. For example why non of the neighbouring countries accept people from Gaza? It seems very complicated
Gibbon1•5mo ago
In the middle east you have many of the same issues you had with African states after colonialism. They are made up of a bunch of different tribal groups who often aren't on good terms. Long history of exploitation and conflict over resources.

Typically for Arab countries if you great grandfather wasn't living there in the 1920's you're not a citizen and that is that.

The worst of it is Palestinians have been used as pawns by outsiders with no actual interest in their welfare. By Arab countries in their pissiness about state not run by Muslims. And the Soviets in their conflict with the US and western Europe.

pcthrowaway•5mo ago
First of all, "neighbouring countries" have taken many Palestinians, and many have taken immigrants/refugees from Gaza also.

But there's a frequent suggestion that it somehow reflects poorly on the Palestinian people that the other countries which are so quick to criticize Israel aren't taking them, and I think this insidious statement is rooted in anti-Palestinian racism, almost a reversal of victim and offender type of thing.

In fact, the rhetoric used about Palestinians sounds eerily similar to the way Jews were talked about during the Holocaust. I quote to you from Hitler's 1939 Reichstag speech:

> But there is one thing that every one should realize: These attempts cannot influence Germany in the slightest as to the way in which she settles her Jewish problem. On the contrary, in connection with the Jewish question I have this to say: It is a shameful spectacle to see how the whole democratic world is oozing sympathy for the poor tormented Jewish people, but remains hardhearted and obdurate when it comes to helping them, which is surely, in view of its attitude, an obvious duty

> The arguments that are brought up as an excuse for not helping them actually, speak for us Germans and Italians, for this is what they say:

> 1) We, that is the democracies, are not in a position to take in the Jews; yet in these empires there are not even ten people to the square kilometre, while Germany, with her 135 inhabitants to the square kilometre, is supposed to have room for them.

> 2) They assure us: we cannot take them unless Germany is prepared to allow them a certain amount of capital to bring with them as immigrants.
