There are old studies that did the same with LSD for normal religious folk before they attended mass. Control group got something else that just causes slight tingle.

The results were pretty much the same. Some people in the control group also had 'experiences', but they were not in the same direction as those who took psychedelics. Psychedelic spiritual experiences have common direction.
