Ask HN: Does driving keep computer programmers grounded in the real world?

Unlike taking public transportation, where programmers can safely drift into another world of thought, driving demands they stay sharply focused on reality to avoid accidents.

I don't think there's anything special about programmers in this. I think that driving helps increase the separation between people and the real world. Both a literal, physical separation as well as a psychological one. OTOH, I don't think this is much different when being a passenger in a vehicle, so something like riding the bus or train doesn't have an advantage in this.
Riding a bicycle or walking, however, is an entirely different matter.
